Berry oat fuel smoothie

Before a long morning session. The oats are what make this last past warm-ups.

Ingredients

Making for

1 serving

  • Frozen mixed berries1 cup
  • Bananas0.5 each
  • Rolled oats0.5 cup
  • Milk1 cup
  • Peanut butter1 tbsp
  • Honey1 tbsp

Quantities scale linearly with servings. Round to the nearest practical amount when shopping.

Steps

  1. 1

Blend the oats dry, before anything else goes in

Half a cup of rolled oats into the dry blender, 15 seconds on high, until it looks like coarse flour. This is the difference between a smooth drink and a gritty one. Oats blended wet stay as flecks that sit on the tongue no matter how long you run it.

  2. 2

    Milk in, then the rest

One cup of milk onto the oat flour, then one cup of frozen mixed berries, half a banana, a tablespoon of peanut butter and a tablespoon of honey.

  3. 3

Blend 45 seconds and drink it within about ten minutes

Oats keep absorbing liquid after blending, so this thickens noticeably as it sits. At 20 minutes it is closer to a pudding. That is fine in a bowl with a spoon, but it will not go up a straw.

Coach's notes

  • Rolled oats, not instant and not steel-cut. Instant goes slimy, steel-cut never softens.
  • Oats are why this holds through a 90 minute session where a plain fruit smoothie does not.
  • If it thickens too far, milk loosens it straight back without hurting the flavour.
  • Elvis does not eat oatmeal, and this is the version that gets around it: same slow carbohydrate, no oatmeal texture.
