Ingredients

Making for

1 serving

  • Whole-grain bread2 each
  • Peanut butter2 tbsp
  • Bananas1 each

Quantities scale linearly with servings. Round to the nearest practical amount when shopping.

Steps

  1. 1

    Toast it properly dark

Two slices of whole-grain bread, toasted until the edges are genuinely brown. Pale toast goes limp under peanut butter within a minute and a limp slice gets left.

  2. 2

Peanut butter while it is hot, banana after

One tablespoon per slice, spread while hot so it loosens and goes on thin. Then a banana sliced into coins across both. Peanut butter first is the waterproof layer; banana straight onto toast makes it wet.

  3. 3

Cinnamon, if he will have it

A pinch over the banana. Costs nothing, makes it taste like a treat, and is the difference between eaten and half eaten in a lot of houses.

Coach's notes

  • About 400 calories and 14 g of protein for four minutes of work, which is a good trade at 6am.
  • Whole grain matters here. White toast with sugar-sweetened peanut butter is a fast spike and an early crash.
  • Cut into fingers rather than triangles for a younger kid. It gets eaten walking to the car.
  • Sun butter swaps in one for one at a nut-free house.
