Lunch
Chicken + rice, plain
3 hours before kickoff, on a day where the stomach is already nervous. Deliberately boring.

Steps
- 1
Plain white rice, no oil, no seasoning
1 and a quarter cups cooked jasmine rice. Nothing on it. This plate exists because a nervous stomach and an unfamiliar flavour is a bad combination an hour before a match.
- 2
Chicken cooked dry, salt only
About 5 oz of chicken breast in a dry or barely oiled pan, salted, cooked through, sliced. No sauce, no butter, no garlic. Fat and strong flavours are the two things most likely to come back on you.

A banana on the side
Eaten with the meal or kept for 45 minutes before warm-ups. Easy carbohydrate that nobody has ever struggled to digest.
Coach's notes
- This is the plate for a first tournament, an away game, or any day he says his stomach feels funny. It is not meant to be the everyday meal.
- Low fat and low fibre is the whole point. Both slow down how fast the stomach empties, and full is the worst way to start a match.
- 3 hours is the target. If it slips to 90 minutes, halve the chicken and keep the rice.
- Boring is a feature. Every ingredient here is one he has eaten a hundred times.
